The Opened World
The Mire
The Mire is the continental section south of The Fade, dominated by extensive wetlands. Created during the Great War when the Rupture of the Eye of Life shattered the continent and unbalanced the elements, it is said that all water fled from the north. Now the lands north of The Fade form the wastelands of the Kinsthet Desert, while the lands to the south are covered by a slow-moving stream hundreds of miles across. Also nicknamed the Bayous for the majority ecosystem, The Mire actually contains a wide variety of bogs, fens, sloughs, cypress swamps, mangrove and hardwood hammocks, and open lakes. Despite the wide and flat nature of the landscape, the dense plant growth and lack of dry stable areas has left it largely unexplored and unsettled. Further, the inhospitable terrain and influence from The Fade have evolved a variety of unique life-forms found no where else, many of which are quite dangerous. Giant insects and arthropods vie for supremacy with monstrous aquatic reptiles, while an immense range of birds make their homes along the twisted trees and shoreless waters. Perhaps the Plaguelands are the only large section of the world more difficult to cross, though there are a few tiny settlements near the edges.
